What if time travel was a regulated technolgy used by future historians to learn from historical events? Today's #thursdaythoughts #bookreview is To Say Nothing of the Dog by science fiction author Connie Willis.
Temporal historian at Oxford history department, Ned Henry has most recently been on a trip to 1940 to recover a remarkable hideous vase for a project to restore Coventry Cathedral in 2057, organised by wealthy American patron Lady Schrapnell. Upon his return he's found to have a case of time-lag and, in order to recover, he is sent to 1888 to an idyllic English countryside - perfect for rest and relaxation and to carry out a straightforward assignment. His trip, however, starts to fall apart, as a new aquaintance reveals to him an infatuation for Tossie, the ancestor of Lady Schrapnell herself, and is tasked with subtly preventing the two from meeting while finding her unknown suitor to ensure the future proceeds as planned.
This is a fun and entertaining time travel adventure which harks back to classics such as Three Men in a Boat (The book name is a direct reference), P.G. Wodehouse Jeeves and Wooster novels and similar English literature. The beauacratic nature of the time travel involved, and nature of its use is amusingly written and there is absolutely thought put into the implications of the technology being used in such a way. This is a book which takes its time, and waits until the last part to wrap up the story, but uses the time to explore the characters and situation well without taking away the sci-fi elements. For fans of period romance books, with a sci-fi twist, this is a fun and smartly written book, and one we'd certainly recommend!

"I have never written anything in one draft, not even a grocery list, although I have heard from friends that this is actually possible." - Connie Willis
For sci-fi writer Connie Willis, it's impossible to get the right story in a single take. While some might be happy with streams of consciousness, Willis prefers to pour over drafts, adding or removing parts she sees as improving her work.
When doing your own writing, don't be put out if you don't get it right first time. It's often preferable to have multiple drafts going to allow you to better explore your ideas and characters, allowing for a more thoughtful piece carved over time.

“The brain, you see, is not a computer, despite oft repeated claims to the contrary. The brain is a living thing; much like an overgrown garden than an orderly filing cabinet. And mind wandering through your own garden of thoughts, memories, feelings and desires is a sure way to discover your inner creative self.”
― Rahul Jandial
For neuroscientist, and author, Rahul Jandial creativity can be found by letting the mind wander. Jandial's books cover a range of neuroscientific topics from the more practically focussed professional works for medical experts, to those for more general audiences. According to Jandial, even a half-hour walk is enough to allow your mind to keep the creative juices flowing.
When considering your own writing and creative efforts, don't forget to schedule in some time to just do nothing and let your thoughts run wild. Getting out and about can help, but even just setting some time aside to sit and do little else can help you.

"You will have to write and put away or burn a lot of material before you are comfortable in this medium. You might as well start now and get the work done. For I believe that eventually quantity will make for quality." - Ray Bradbury
A titan of the Sci-Fi literary world, Ray Bradbury was famous for his prolific writing ability, but what lay behind this? For Bradbury his writing frenzy was, in part, to do with finding new ideas and better ways to write material. By continuously putting pen to paper, finger to keyboard, he thought that you could continually improve upon your own work. After all, practice makes perfect!
As a writer, you may be tempted to give up within the first draft or two. It is, however, only through experience and dogged determination that you can improve your craft and make better prose and poetry that will make you proud. Keep on going, despite the setbacks, and you will advance your skill.
